Story behind the shot

New fronds and pneumatocysts form at the tip of a giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) off the coast of San Clemente Island California.

This photograph has been awarded several honors and hung in exhibits including the San Diego Natural History Museum’s “Best of Nature” show, and is touring California as part of the California Coastal Commission’s “California Ocean and Coastal photography contest winners” exhibit.
